Whale sharks are found in tropical open waters. La Paz serves as a nursery and feeding area of whale sharks. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind sea adventure, then swimming with the whale sharks at La Paz might just be the thing for you. Take a plunge and swim with the biggest fish in the world!
Whale sharks are known as the gentle giants of the sea. They can grow up to 40 feet, weigh more than 20 tons, and live for more than 100 years. Despite their massive size, whale sharks are friendly and peaceful marine dwellers. They look quite scary with their enormous open mouths (up to four feet wide) but they feed almost exclusively on plankton. These filter feeders are not harmful to humans.
Swimming with whale sharks is a fun activity but please exercise due diligence when you are near them. For safety purposes, we require our guests to wear life vests and use proper snorkeling equipment. Please maintain a minimum distance of 5m from the whale shark. Do not put on sunblock, tanning lotion or other oils on the day of swimming with the whale sharks because such chemicals may be harmful to whale sharks.
Best whale shark sightings and time to swim with them are from October through March.
